Back to School with a defibrillator

The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust is lending its support to a community campaign which is set to launch this weekend in Accrington.  The ‘Back to School with a Defib’ campaign which is being led by  retail giant ASDA,  the UK’s heart failure charity, The Pumping Marvellous Foundation along with the Media Village – a print and design business based in the Hyndburn area, aims to raise funds to supply AEDs to as many local schools in Hyndburn as possible.

The initiative, which is the brain child of the Pumping Marvellous Foundation’s founder, Nick Hartshorne Evans, will launch in the ASDA Accrington store on Friday 12 July at 10am. Customers shopping in store will have the chance to learn Basic Life Support techniques from NWAS until 1pm.

Nick Harshorne Evans, CEO and Trustee of Pumping Marvellous commented: “Over the past 12 months we have been working with NWAS’ Chain of Survival team, and so far, have installed over 20 AEDs in schools across Lancashire. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank both NWAS and ASDA for their support and Media Village for designing the campaign material.”

Mike Hockney, General Store Manager at ASDA Accrington commented: “This is a fantastic initiative which we’re really pleased to be able to support for the local community. ASDA Accrington has done a lot to help raise funds in this area. We have a very loyal customer base and we are very happy to be able to give something back to the community.”

Cheryl Pickstock, NWAS Chain of Survival County Co-ordinator commented: “NWAS are working in partnership with Pumping Marvellous and ASDA to map specific schools in Hyndburn, which could benefit from having an AED installed. AED’s are simple to operate and only deliver a shock if the patient’s heart is in a specific rhythm. AEDs work by delivering an electric pulse through the chest, in an attempt to restore normal heart rhythm.  If defibrillation is delivered promptly, survival rates as high as 75% can be achieved.”
