Comfy chair does the trick for heart failure patients
Press Release 24th March 2014
Heart Failure patients at The Royal Blackburn Hospital will now be able to rest and sleep more easily – thanks to a special chair which has been funded from charitable donations.
Wilpshire-based fundraising group ‘Just for Alex’ donated money to help the charity ‘The Pumping Marvellous Foundation’ to purchase this special chair, which was further topped up with a £400 contribution from money given by cardiology patients to the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. Pumping Marvellous supplied the chair which is made of memory foam to promote comfortable rest for patients on cardiology ward B18 at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.
Nick Hartshorne-Evans, Chief Executive for The Pumping Marvellous Foundation said: “Fluid can accumulate on the lungs of heart failure patients which can make breathing difficult and they can struggle to lie flat. This special chair allows them to rest more comfortably. It also helps staff to move patients about and elevate the seat.”
Angela Graves, Heart Failure Nurse Manager at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: ““Heart failure patients are often admitted to hospital in great distress, and may have struggled for days and nights getting little or no sleep due to the breathing difficulties they experience as a result of their heart failure.
“When they are admitted the aim is to remove fluid that has gathered in the patient’s lungs with medication. This often takes time, and the chair that Pumping Marvellous has provided enables the patient to gain much-needed rest whilst the medication begins to do its job. We would like to say ‘a big thank you’ to Pumping Marvellous and the ‘Just for Alex’ fundraisers for this wonderful piece of equipment.”
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and The Pumping Marvellous Foundation will be holding a Cinderella Ball in November to raise money for a second chair for the Ward.
