Stress, recognising it and then doing something about it.
The effects of stress
Stress does not directly cause heart failure, but it can contribute to it. Many people under stress find that they resort to less healthy behaviour, such as smoking, drinking too much alcohol and overeating, particularly unhealthy foods. These factors can all increase your risk of getting coronary heart disease, and hence heart failure.
If you have a lot of stress in your life, changing to a healthy diet and increasing the amount of physical activity that you do can make you feel fitter and better able to cope. Learning how to relax is also important. Some people find that doing exercise such as yoga, listening to music or other relaxation techniques are helpful. I have found that Tai Chi is an excellent form of relaxation and really focusses your mind on breathing and relaxation. It is also very good for your joints!
