The Pumping Marvellous Foundation (PMF) is the UK’s patient led Heart Failure Charity. Although our Trustee Board consists of a handful of passionate patient centric clinicians we are patient led and not clinically led. It was founded by a heart failure patient whose experiences whilst rehabilitating have shaped the Foundation’s goals and principles of a patient-centric charity focused on improved patient outcomes.
The beneficiaries are all people who suffer from heart failure together with their family and friends. The Pumping Marvellous Foundation’s goal is to deliver HOPE to its beneficiaries through the facilitation of better outcomes by cross-working and advocating the beneficiaries at a local, regional, national and international level; working hand in hand with commissioners and clinicians to deliver better pathways and be the patient voice of progression. Our services include patient driven solutions, created by patients guided but not policed by the Foundation available in printed and online format. The Pumping Marvellous Foundation is funded through donations and fundraising by individuals, support from the NHS and charitable organisations together with corporate sponsorship.
All of the potential 1,000,000 heart failure sufferers, their families and carers in England and Wales qualify for assistance. The Foundation has no bias towards specific sub groups. Heart Failure is an umbrella of individual conditions and spans across all socioeconomic groups therefore our support is varied and tailored to the specific needs and requests. At the moment we only deal with adults. The Foundation is headquartered in East Lancashire and has a network of regional volunteers across the country who deliver the core messages and actively participate in campaigns, publications, distribution of literature and local relationship building. We have a strong online presence and with the development of a new website by May 2014 this will enable the Foundation to reach out and catalyse progression in heart failure care with stronger engagement with clinicians and sufferers and their families.
Heart Failure is a progressive condition and has currently no cure. Approximately 75% of heart failure diagnoses are caused by persistent unchecked hypertension or cardiac MI’s (heart attacks). Recently people are managing to survive with better intervention techniques but are coming out the other side with heart failure. It is estimated that in 10 years, from 2012, the cost of managing heart failure in the NHS will increase on top of normal inflation by 50%. Prognosis of heart failure patients is less favourable than most common cancers therefore mortality is significant, acute readmission levels are high and it has been calculated that heart failure admissions equate to over 2% of the total admissions in A&E. The Foundation’s value in these pathways is to promote HOPE to sufferers, promoting self-care and self-education through peer to peer coaching and support. We HOPE to have impact on reducing this ever increasing burden on the Health Economy by getting patients and their families actively managing their condition. The Pumping Marvellous Foundation is an invaluable resource to the NHS.
Our services and products improve the ability of heart failure patients to self-care, recognising the early symptoms and self-interventions and steps that can be taken to alleviate common symptoms. An investment in the Pumping Marvellous Foundation is a small investment in comparison to ignoring the problem of heart failure.
The mission of The Pumping Marvellous Foundation is to give HOPE to heart failure patients and their families and by involving them in their own care. Advocate for them at a local, regional and national level and work in tandem with the NHS to deliver the right care.
